ACCESSIBLE ROUTES TO SCHOOL

This project departed from the “Safe School Route” program developed and implemented by the São Paulo City Council's Traffic Engineering Company (CET), using it as an initial case study and, from there, adding perspectives on universal accessibility and safety, taking into account the functional diversity of schoolchildren and their caregivers. The aim was to develop and consolidate knowledge related to traffic safety, active mobility, childhood, people with functional diversity, and education in an integrated way, ultimately proposing replicable solutions so that all children have safer and more accessible school routes.

Roas escolares seguras e acessíveis para todas as crianças - Reports

The aim of this consultancy, developed in partnership with IDOM for the World Bank, was to build a knowledge base on how to apply universal accessibility solutions with a focus on children in vulnerable areas. In addition, this work provides strategies to create safer and more accessible School Routes for all children, including children with functional diversity and their caregivers, recommending the application of mobility solutions that can relate to the problems faced in vulnerable communities in São Paulo.

As part of this project, several workshops were held with school-age children and adolescents in two selected neighborhoods, covering children from 3 years old to sixth grade. These inclusive pedagogical activities were aimed at introducing urban mobility and accessibility issues to this audience, as well as capturing their impressions and experiences on this topic in the neighborhood where they live and study, which would later be incorporated into the diagnosis carried out in the field by the team.

The work culminated in a series of reports proposing design solutions to be implemented by CET-SP, as well as suggesting a menu of activities aligned with the National Common Core Curriculum on these themes to be applied in schools, according to each school cycle.
